Assembly enables you to share Google Docs with your clients directly within your portal. You can embed documents for viewing only or enable collaborative editing with clients.

App setup

Connecting view-only Google Docs

  1. In the Dashboard sidebar, click + Add App, then under More ways to add select Embed existing content.
  2. Choose Google Docs from Popular embeds — or click Add embed to start from a URL.
  3. Click + Embed app. You’ll land on the app’s setup page.
  4. Set a title and icon for the app.
  5. Set as automatic (same document for all clients) or manual (specific documents per client).
  6. Select Show as embed so clients aren’t directed outside the portal.
  7. Open the document you want to embed in Google Docs.
  8. Click File > Share > Publish to web, then click Publish.
  9. Copy the generated link.
  10. Return to the App Setup page, paste the link into the content box, and click Add.

Connecting editable Google Docs

Follow the same steps as above, with two differences:
  1. In Google Docs, click Share and set permissions to Anyone with the link can edit.
  2. Instead of pasting the link on its own, wrap it in an iframe code snippet:
Replace link with your Google Doc URL while preserving the quotation marks.

Optimizing for mobile

If documents appear narrow on mobile devices, adjust the page margins in Google Docs. Changing the margins to 0.1 works, though you can adjust until the rendering matches your needs. Access this through File > Page Setup in Google Docs. To preview functionality, connect the app to a test client and access the portal to verify the implementation.
